Overview of Malta

Malta is a small island nation in the Mediterranean Sea, located 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Libya. The archipelago includes three main islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino. With a population of around 500,000, Malta is the largest and serves as the cultural, administrative, and commercial center. Gozo is known for its rural charm, while Comino attracts tourists with its crystal-clear waters and trekking opportunities.

Malta has a rich history, having been a British colony until gaining independence in 1964. It became a republic in 1974, joined the EU in 2004, and adopted the Euro in 2008. The official languages are Maltese and English, with Italian widely spoken.

The country has a thriving economy, driven by tourism, finance, online gaming, and manufacturing. Valletta, the capital, is known for its baroque architecture and UNESCO-listed heritage sites. Education is highly regarded, with institutions like the University of Malta offering various programs in English.

With its Mediterranean climate, Malta enjoys warm summers and mild winters, making it a year-round destination for both tourism and living.

Malta

Malta’s economy is primarily driven by tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The country’s growth accelerated after the opening of the Suez Canal, as it became a key maritime hub. In recent years, film production, online gaming, and financial services have flourished, further boosting the economy.

The island enjoys a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters with occasional rainfall. Malta’s weather makes it a popular year-round destination.

Known for its rich history and culture, Malta is home to several historic sites and UNESCO World Heritage sites, all located within a small area. This concentration of cultural landmarks makes it one of the most historically significant regions in the world.

Why Malta

Despite being the smallest country in Europe, Malta offers high-quality education across all levels, with a curriculum that meets international standards. Its top-rated academic institutions, equipped with excellent infrastructure, attract students from around the world. The country’s healthcare system is also ranked among the best in Europe and is free for residents. Due to Malta’s bilingual status, many programs are offered in English, making it an ideal destination for both international and local students seeking globally recognized qualifications.

In addition to its great weather, top-notch healthcare, and safe living environment, Malta is also relatively affordable compared to other European countries. These factors, combined with the lower cost of higher education, make Malta an increasingly popular choice for international students looking for a quality education at an affordable price. As a result, many students choose to remain in Malta after completing their studies, taking advantage of the country’s favorable living conditions and opportunities.

Maltese Education System

The Maltese education system follows the British model and is structured into four levels: pre-primary (ages 3-5), primary (ages 5-11), secondary (ages 11-18), and tertiary (over 18). Education is compulsory until the age of 16. At the secondary level, students have the option to choose vocational subjects, thanks to the Maltese Qualifications Framework. Malta has three main types of educational institutions: state schools, which are publicly funded and offer free study materials and transport (though parents must pay for uniforms); church-run schools, owned by the Catholic Church, which provide free tuition but require parents to cover additional expenses; and private institutions, mostly attended by foreign students in Malta, operated by private organizations.
